Heart rate variability and self-control—A meta-analysis

2015

Heart rate variability (HRV) has been suggested as a biological correlate of self-control. Whereas many studies found a relationship between HRV at rest and self-control, effect sizes vary substantially across studies in magnitude and direction. This meta-analysis evaluated the association between HRV at rest and self-control in laboratory tasks, with a particular focus on the identification of moderating factors (task characteristics, methodological aspects of HRV assessment, demographics). Overall, 24 articles with 26 studies and 132 effects (n=2317, mean age=22.44, range 18.4-57.8) were integrated (random effects model with robust variance estimation). We found a positive average effect …

Model-Assisted Estimation Through Random Forests in Finite Population Sampling

2021

In surveys, the interest lies in estimating finite population parameters such as population totals and means. In most surveys, some auxiliary information is available at the estimation stage. This information may be incorporated in the estimation procedures to increase their precision. In this article, we use random forests (RFs) to estimate the functional relationship between the survey variable and the auxiliary variables. In recent years, RFs have become attractive as National Statistical Offices have now access to a variety of data sources, potentially exhibiting a large number of observations on a large number of variables. We establish the theoretical properties of model-assisted proc…

A Proposal to estimate the roaming–dog Total in an urban area through a PPSWOR spatial sampling with sample size greater than two

2018

Settore SECS-S/05 - Statistica SocialeDogs roaming in urban areas constitute an issue for public order hygiene and health. Proper planning of actions for health and security control and allocation of financial funds require the knowledge of the roaming–dog–population size in a given urban area. Unfortunately a reliable statistical procedure aimed to measure such population is not available yet in literature. This paper presents a simple reproducible survey sampling procedure to estimate the number of roaming dogs in an urban area through the description of a real study carried out on a restricted area of the city of Palermo in southern Italy. A sample of areas is drawn by means of a drawn–by–drawn spatial sampling with probabilities proportional to size and without replacement (PPSWOR). As inclusion probabilities are not available in closed form they are estimated by Monte Carlo approach which is of simple implementation and permits design–based variance estimation even when first–order inclusion probabilities are unknown.

A new mathematical approach for the estimation of the AUC and its variability under different experimental designs in preclinical studies

2011

The aim of the present work was to develop a new mathematical method for estimating the area under the curve (AUC) and its variability that could be applied in different preclinical experimental designs and amenable to be implemented in standard calculation worksheets. In order to assess the usefulness of the new approach, different experimental scenarios were studied and the results were compared with those obtained with commonly used software: WinNonlin® and Phoenix WinNonlin®. The results do not show statistical differences among the AUC values obtained by both procedures, but the new method appears to be a better estimator of the AUC standard error, measured as the coverage of 95% confi…

Time perception in depression: a meta-analysis.

2014

Background Depressive patients frequently report to perceive time as going by very slowly. Potential effects of depression on duration judgments have been investigated mostly by means of four different time perception tasks: verbal time estimation, time production, time reproduction, and duration discrimination. Ratings of the subjective flow of time have also been obtained. Methods By means of a classical random-effects meta-regression model and a robust variance estimation model, this meta-analysis aims at evaluating the inconsistent results from 16 previous studies on time perception in depression, representing data of 433 depressive patients and 485 healthy control subjects. Results Dep…

Properties of Design-Based Functional Principal Components Analysis.

2010

This work aims at performing Functional Principal Components Analysis (FPCA) with Horvitz-Thompson estimators when the observations are curves collected with survey sampling techniques. One important motivation for this study is that FPCA is a dimension reduction tool which is the first step to develop model assisted approaches that can take auxiliary information into account. FPCA relies on the estimation of the eigenelements of the covariance operator which can be seen as nonlinear functionals. Adapting to our functional context the linearization technique based on the influence function developed by Deville (1999), we prove that these estimators are asymptotically design unbiased and con…
